Orlando or Bust

I am so excited about our family trip to Disney coming up. It's almost here! I can't wait to see Abby's face when Elmo walks in for Breakfast with Elmo! And I am super excited about meeting Katie, Brian's girlfriend. In preparation for the trip, I am in total training mode. I never realized how much pregnancy makes it hard to walk long distances, but boy is it hard. I am taking the stairs at work more and going for long walks after dinner. Even doing the aerobics hasn't completely prepared me for walking - who knew! So please keep in your thoughts as our trip approaches that I might actually make it past the front gate!

Little Things for Little People

We had an incredibly busy weekend!  We started out by going to Babies 'R Us.  I have to admit that place terrifies me.  I don't understand how there can be sooooooo many choices of everything.  And how it can all be so expensive.  After getting completely overwhelmed there we took the rest of the night off and on Saturday (between putting up insulation) we went to a local consignment shop.  We found amazing deals on maternity clothes for me - which is the other thing I can't condone the price of.  The clothes I got are super cute and in excellent condition.  A spin through the washer and just like new!  We also picked out a few little outfits for Lola.  David has a talent for picking out the baby clothes - who knew!  I must admit David has taken to this baby thing like white on rice.  It has brought about such a remarkable change in him.  He was made for fatherhood and I can't wait to see him with our son or daughter.  Then on Sunday I ran to Meijer where I found the cutest lamb layette!  It was on sale so I had to get it!  It is super cute.  Below are a few pictures of Lola's first outfits and a picture of me at 20 weeks (not even taken in a bathroom at work!)

Pooh Bear Outfit (David loved Pooh from his childhood and wants Lola to have Pooh Bear too!)

Rough Inspection Complete!

On Friday we had are final visits from the electrical, HVAC, and plumbing inspectors. After some more looking around everything was approved!!! They were very impressed wtih David - almost as impressed as me! I have included a few pictures here of what the current state of the basement is. After the approvals we started on the mass amount of insulation that we are installing. I sat on the floor and did the cutting and David did the actual installation. Before we covered up the entire concrete we signed and data the wall. Who knows if anyone will ever see it but we know it's there!

Hello world...its been a LONG time since I posted - yes Lyds, I do remember how to type. Well there have been major major changes in the Lomax household and the Lomax life plan since our anniversary. I will say if 2009 taught me anything it's that planning and having control of things are things you will never have, so you might as well just let go and let God. At any point in the last year when I had made a plan or thought we had a plan, boom, God changes it. So now I am just praying for His guidance and His will alone and leaving the rest to Him.

So to the changes...

I have never been a regular every 28-day kind of girl, so I have always routinely taken pregnancy tests, which David begrudingly obliges the purchase of since 1) they are always negative 2) I take birth control pills, and 3) I have been told for the last 15 years that due to PCOS (I actually was diagnosed with it) I am unable to get pregnant. So anywho, I digress, Saturday night after Thanksgiving, I took another test and it was inconculsive, which was something different (every PT I have ever taken was definitively negative). So a few hours later I took another one and it was negative - ahhh.. nice back to normal.... So I finish up, flush, and pull up my pants, turn around and there are two blue lines. At this I am really trying to figure out what is wrong with the test so I flipped it around a few times, checked the other side of the test, and re-read the instructions, and it turns out what was wrong was that it was POSITIVE. At this point I am not exactly thrilled. This is NOT the plan; well it was the plan, just not the timeline. You know every good engineer and project manager needs a detailed timeline with deliverables. But my "deliverable" was now due 3 years early!! This is reason to panic. But I played cool and calmly went to bed, and proceeded to lay there stiff as a board. David tried to cuddle, but its hard to cuddle with a wooden board. So we started the typical "what's wrong," "nothing," "no seriously, what's wrong," game. Finally I set up and said "I'm pregnant." Until that moment, I had never known the meaning of this face :
However, that is exactly what David looked like. Let's just suffice it say that after 7 years, I don't suprise David all that often, despite my best efforts. But that night I nearly collapsed his heart. I have to say that all-in-all, he took it incredibly well. I, on the other hand, was a basket case - part of me was thrilled beyond all belief, part of me was terrified, part of me was completely aware that this would end in some horrible miscarriage (hence my routine of looking up signs of miscarriage and routes to every local hospital, just to be sure I knew when to make said trip to the hospital), and part of me felt trashy and dirty because of the "situation" I was in. I have since learned that many many many pregnancies are unplanned, and I am married, financially stable, and 29 years old. So not exactly a bad "situation" to bring a perfect little person into.
Meanwhile, my mom is in the guest room. I am debating if I should go tell her, should I not tell her. We decided to not tell her because we both were feeling like kids in trouble and didn't want a lecture. So the next day we dropped her off at the airport like nothing had changed. On the way home David and I started talking about things - like would I work, what would we do, how did this happen. We went to Walmart (to buy a multitude of pregnancy tests) and in the checkout line, the clerk and a shopper were debating how many months it was until the August grand re-opening of the newly renovated Bolingbrook Walmart. I was putting the stuff on the belt, when David blurts out.."IT'S NINE MONTHS, AUGUST IS NINE MONTHS FROM NOW, I KNOW THAT DATE VERY WELL." I bursted out laughing and the other two women tried to carry on as if he hadn't just exploded in the middle of their debate. He then looked at me and said "Well I had to think about something after you told me, and that's all I could think about."
At dinner that night, we decided the only way to move past our feelings of shame was to tell our parents. So David being the brave soul he is, went first. I have to say of all of my family and friends Momma Jean wins for the strangest reaction with "Is that a good idea?" She was of course referring to my heart, diabetes, and overall health. Then the reality that there would be a grandchild set in and she was estatic! I don't know that excited exactly describes how she and my mom feel. It's amazing to see their faces and hear the sheer joy in their voices. I am so happy that God has blessed us with this wonderful time in our lives. My mom wins for funniest reaction. While she was here at Thanksgiving, we had been discussing where we wanted to go on vacation. So here's how the conversation went:
Amy: "What are you thinking about doing in August?"
Mom:"I dont know, why?"
Amy: "Well I was thinking of having a baby."
Momma: "A what?"
Amy: "A baby."
Momma: "What do you mean a baby?"
Amy: "A baby, ya know it cries and poops a baby?"
Momma: "Are you pregnant?"
Amy: "Yes."
Momma: "Oh my God!!" And then the tears started.
So the next day at work, I start calling the doctors. First the cardiologist, who gave me 100% reassurance that I am fine to carry and deliver this baby, with the understanding that I might not be able to breastfeed due to medications. Next, I found a new ObGyn, whom I love, and we were set. At the first ObGyn appointment, she said I was 8 weeks along and that baby looked healthy. So we were off to a great start.
Now I am 20 weeks along and things are going great. The baby is still in here and I very much have a baby bump. All the tests we have taken (and we have had MANY) show that everything is fine at this point. We have a fetal ECHO in a few weeks which will check for any heart defects. We have elected not to know the sex and be surprised at birth! We are very happy and excited with our decision, but in the meantime refer to the baby as Lola. Lola Lomax .. what a horrible name, but its stuck! We think we have selected a girl's name but are keeping it under wraps (nobody likes a name stealer!) If you have any boy name suggestions we would love to hear them as we are clueless.
In other news, the basement is going very well. The inspectors are due here any minute to give their approval to the rough construction. Once that is blessed then the fast and furious finishing can begin. We have decided to hire someone to install the drywall (obviously heavy construction is out for me and David can't do it all himself!.) Once that's in - it's really just finishing work. We have to have it all done by the end of July to statisfy our permit requirements. Which that gives us one month to finish the baby's room!
Well the inspectors just pulled up so I have to run! I will post more later!!!

Ohh Babyface

>> Sunday, November 8, 2009

Wow. The last two weeks have been super crazy. My brother called to say that he is going to have a baby. This is awesome news, in that, there is going to be a baby. I, however, took it incredibly hard. A baby is the one thing I want and have for a very long time, and unfortunately, all indications are that I can't have one naturally. Obviously we haven't tried yet but that's what the doctor's say. When my sister and friends starting having them, I mourned a little, but I wasn't ready anyway so it was easy to over. Now that I am ready, and David's not and the timing is bad, it is really hard to admit that it's not time to try. But never, in my wildest dreams, would I have considered that Alex would have a baby before me. It threw me for a complete loop. It taught me a huge lesson: you can't plan life - it just happens. And it happens in the way that God wants, not in the way that you want. My sincerest hope is that this baby is healthy and happy. And I pray that Alex will let me be part of it's life. Because even with all my faults, I do try to be a good and fair person.

Last night I got a call from the church and they asked me to be an Elder! It is a huge honor and responsibility. I was voted in today at the annual meeting. I will be ordained as an Elder in January. I will do things like help with Sunday service and communion and vote on day to day business in the church. It will be a great experience to see how the church functions and hopefully will help me fulfill my responsibility to God and His people.

This weekend was beautiful in Chicago! It has been pretty cold lately so this weekend being the 70s was amazing. We ate lunch on the patio yesterday and had a cookout for dinner! It was super fun. We worked on plumbing again this weekend. We got the goofy water dispenser in the fridge that won't dispense water to actually work! We finished connecting the pipes for the wet bar in the basement. And we had a minor catastrophe with the stove and David was able to fix that. He has also promised to clean the oven the next time I am traveling for work, which is this week so cross your fingers for me!

While David watched football, GO GEORGIA TECH!, I tried desperately to master the art of pumpkin bread. David has been very good about realizing that I am now the most important woman in his life, but when it comes to pumpkin bread he is squarely a momma's boy. So I try. You would think that mixing the right ingredients together would work, but nope its impossible. After three failed batches, I think I've got it! I made one amazing batch and now I am cooking the second with my new-found skill! Hopefully this will work to, if not, Jean, please come teach me!

I have also taken a huge step in our relationship, throwing out David's underwear. You might think nothing of this or just "how odd," but seriously that man is attached to his underwear. No one other than Jean has ever bought him underwear and he is great with that. However, after nearly 7 years of the same underwear, they are starting to deteriorate, one thread at a time. Now, don't get me wrong, he has a ridiculous amount of underwear at least 30 pairs, but none were bought after he went to college. So now every time I see a small tear, I rip it. Is that sad?!?!?! I just want the man to get new drawers. Is that wrong?!?!? Please weigh in on this!

For those that don't know, here is a small picture of our family. Charlie is the cat, that almost made time for the picture, and George is that poor dog David is man-handling!

A super cute picture of two of my favorite guys!

One last final note: I have decided to rejoin Jazzercise. I have been trying to workout on my own since my schedule is so crazy. But I am so bored. I need the class interaction. So I finally broke down and told the truth about how I feel and David was totally onboard! YAY! I am going to go join the Naperville class and go at 5:45. I feel a huge relief with this decision! Good times! And just remember if you don't squeeze it, no one else will either!

A Year of Fun Has Just Begun

>> Monday, October 26, 2009

This weekend we marked our 1 year anniversary. I have to say that after being together for so long, not too much changed when we got married. However, there really is a giddiness inside of me when I think that I have actually been Mrs. Lomax for one year now. I am pretty sure that David feels it to - there is such a permanence associated with sharing a name. We truly are a family now. I can't really explain it but it is just something I feel inside. Basically - I love you David and I love being your wife.

Ok so now on to the details! Friday night we went to Medieval Times with Amy and Patrick. It was so freakin' awesome. We cheered the yellow knight! Unfortunately he was the first knight killed but in the end the good guys prevailed and the baddy was off-ed. Here is a picture of Amy and us taken on Patrick's phone.

When we got home we let George run around outside for awhile but David and I got into a minor tiff about who knows what. Basically it all boiled down to the fact that we were both exhausted. So we went to bed and I slept until 11:30 Saturday morning! Talk about tired. Honestly I think I could still be asleep if I tried, but alas I will have plenty of time for that when I'm dead!

Saturday was another fun filled day. We got up and went to the grocery store and then I cooked a Paper Picnic to celebrate our anniversary. I set up a blanket in the front room (it snowed that morning so it was too cold outside) and cooked fried chicken, corn on the cob, and mashed potatoes. Yummy! We used paper products left over from the wedding. Super cute idea. Thanks Lyds! David took the opportunity to give me my presents which were fun return address labels. The standard ones say Amy & David Lomax and the Christmas ones have caricatures of David, Amy, George, and Charlie dressed in Christmas type accessories. So cute! Later that night we went Christmas shopping and got several people crossed off the list! I am determined not to panic this year and not wait until the last minute. Also David is getting to help this time, since I do not have to shop in some random city in the US. This early shopping is also in response to my desire to never Christmas shop in 6 inches of snow and slush again - I suppose this will change once I have kids, of the two-legged variety, and they need to sit on Santa's lap, but for now I am good with dry toes and non-frost- bitten hands. And to top off Saturday, Georgia Tech won and Miami lost! YAY! I think we might make the ACC championship now. Way to go guys!

Sunday was great. We got up late (I didn’t even flinch before my 9:30am alarm clock went off – I am telling you I am taking exhaustion to a whole new level) and went to church. The sermon had 7 very good points – I just didn’t really get the full connection. The song selection was awesome though. After church we had lunch and watched some football. Then we carved the two pumpkins David picked out on Saturday. We were in a hurry so we just carved traditional faces – but I really like them anyway. Then we decorated the house and the outside with the Halloween décor. I have posted some pictures below! David also had to put up the new door bell - since I am still working on painting the entryway, I took the opportunity to replace the doorbell unit with a white one to match the trim. Then around 3:30pm the kids started coming for the neighborhood trick-and-treating. I know it’s not Halloween yet but that’s the way it went down! I am convinced that just means the kids will come twice but that’s great because we have WAY too much candy left! One kid who was really sweaty asked if I had some bottled water I could give him. I didn’t but of course I had Gatorade! So he was quite happy to take that. He politely didn’t even take any candy. I thought this was very funny because I have never had a request and negotiations from a trick-or-treater before. We dressed George up as a ghost. The kids loved it! He was so excited every time the doorbell rang. It was good times. While that was going on, I wrapped the Christmas presents and caught up with Brothers and Sisters and Grey’s Anatomy – I am seriously behind! David worked in the basement to plumb up the sink for the wet bar. Next week is going to be really gross because we have to cut into the main sewer line. That ought to smell just peachy. Once the kids were done we put on my wedding dress again! I’m not gonna lie – it was tight. But it fit! And it is still beautiful. Then we went to dinner at Keywester. It’s a seafood place that we had never been too. It was neat and fun. I don’t know how often we will go back but it was a new fun thing to do. After dinner we headed home and ate the first tier of our cake. Ok for any new brides who might be reading this: don’t fall into this trap. It was awful. Seriously – I can still taste it. Bad times! It was a wonderful evening. I have posted pictures below.

We talked a lot about our wedding and the past year and what we want from the future. It was an awesome reflection. We went through so much this year. And we really did grow more together. It was truly a weird thing to go from wedding gowns to hospital gowns so quickly but what a blessing in disguise. David really proved to me and my parents that he can be trusted with my life. I know that he will make an amazing father just as he is truly a gift of a husband. I just hope that when the time comes, I won’t forget that he can do things too and that his way might not be my way but the kids will be fine! We have decided that this year we are going to focus on the positive, and to realize that bad things will happen but what really matters are the good things. I have also decided to apologize to him more quickly. To not focus on what he did wrong, but to focus on what I did and how I can change that. I truly hope that everyone can experience true love and what all it means, because it is the best gift you can ever imagine.

Well that was my weekend! I will post more later on but seriously I have to get to work!
